Game 48: Ducks vs. Oilers 1.16.11

OPINION:
As they say, it doesn't matter how you win, just that you win. Another lackluster effort, but they at least TRIED tonight and that little bit of effort they used, was enough to beat the Oilers. Things got a little hairy at the end when the Oilers had a fantastic opportunity to tie the game, and if they had tied the game it would have been no surprise to Ducks fans. A team tying the game in the wee moments of the 3rd period is all too familiar and haunting. I, for one, am glad it didn't happen. They held on, and they won. That's all that matters in the end.

POST GAME QUOTES:
"We take the two points," said Teemu Selanne, who had two goals in the game, "but we are not very happy how we got them."

"Third period they were much better," Selanne said. "They were aggressive, they were skating, they won the battles, and and we had a goalie that stopped everything. Without him this would be ugly.

"It was one of those things where I knew I would go back out there as soon as I got stitched up, so it wasn’t that bad," McElhinney said. "I went to cover the puck and I just kind of fell on the heel of somebody’s skate, I believe. I knew I was cut open but it didn’t feel that bad. As soon as I saw the blood I thought I would just go get it checked out on the bench."

"We thought this was going to be easy, but there are no easy games in this league," said Selanne. "If you can’t play 60 minutes of solid hockey, you are going to be having some problems. And it showed again tonight."

GAME NOTES:
-Anaheim has won four straight games at Honda Center and has gone 10-3-0 at HOME over the last 13 contests. The club is 17-7-1 at HOME this season, earning 35 of a possible 50 standings points. The Ducks currently lead the NHL in wins at HOME in 2010-11 (third in win percentage with .700).
-The Ducks have gone 29-for-30 on the penalty kill (96.7%) dating back to the third period on Dec. 28 at Phoenix (spanning nine games).
-On the power play, Anaheim has a 50% success rate (9-for-18) over the last five games. The club has gone 24-for-91 (26.4%) on the power play at HOME this season, ranking second in the NHL.

OPINION:
Horrible.
That's all I have to say.
Pathetic, even.

POST GAME QUOTES:
"Getting 40 shots isn’t relevant if you’re just taking shots from the boards and the blue line," said Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf. "We’re not doing a good enough job of getting pucks and people there."

"We had our fair opportunities, but again I don’t think we got into that dirty area to create that second and third opportunity," said coach Randy Carlyle. "In the second period, we didn’t execute with the puck to get through the neutral ice. We gave them momentum. We got back in the hockey game and tied it up 2-2. I thought we’d be able to find a way and reach back in the third period."

"The effort is there, but we have to bear down," Getzlaf said. "We’re playing on a little homestand where we have to take advantage of it. We’re going into a break. We have to learn from the mistakes and go forward."

GAME DAY QUOTES:
"We had a number of good chances there on the power play throughout the course of the third period," said Ducks defenseman Chris Pronger. "We were moving it around, moving our feet, getting seams and getting pucks to the net. At the end of the day, a lot those chances are going to squirt on to somebody’s stick and you’re going to put it in the net. Tonight wasn’t the night."

"We gave up four goals and we didn’t really give up a lot the rest of the way, but that is enough to win," said Ducks coach Randy Carlyle. "You can’t be happy when you give up four goals and lose an important game like this. Our effort was there. Obviously, we could have executed better. The situation is we played our hearts out. There was no shortage of work ethic. These are ones where you have to pump people up because get down when you work and you don’t get the result. Tonight was one of those nights."

"I’m sure we’d like to have a better start," Giguere said. "After the first two minutes, I thought we controlled the game. Roloson really kept them in. If we play like this, we’ll win more games than we’ll lose. That is just the bottom line."

"We have to start preparing and focus on Colorado on Sunday," Pronger said. "It’s tough loss. You’re going to feel it here for a little while. When you leave the rink tonight, you have to put it out of your mind and make sure we’re ready to come to the rink tomorrow to work."

Game 13: Ducks vs. Oilers

PERIOD 1: 0 - 1

PERIOD 2: 1 - 1

PERIOD 3: 2 - 2

OVER TIME: 2 - 2

SHOOT OUT: 2 - 3

Um...ROBBED!!! So the Ducks surrendered a last minute SHORT HANDED goal to the greasers that sent us into over time and a shoot out. We were THISCLOSE to winning and 2 points. Instead, because they didn't play a FULL 60 minutes, we get robbed and leave with 1 point, while at the same time giving the greasers those 2 points.

They did play a good game. The first period was slow though, as it usually is. But the 2nd period for the last half, we pretty much dominated them. The 3rd period we still pressured them and played. But then a penalty came to the Oilers with a little over 2 minutes left in the game. They kind of cooled their heels a little bit and well, you should know the rest if you're a Ducks fan.. or any other fan of any other team that's currently laughing at what a pathetic start the Ducks are off to this season.

Well.. after Thursday's game against the Blue Jackets we can sweep the month of October underneath the rug and pretend it never happened. :) Just kidding, but we CAN move on to November and hope November is nicer to us than October seems to be.
