Game 20: Ducks vs. Red Wings 11.20.11

POST GAME QUOTES:
"It’s very frustrating and almost the cruel side of sports," said Ducks coach Randy Carlyle. "We made enough mistakes that cost us the hockey game. There is no other way to describe it. We again mounted a comeback in the hockey game, but it just seems that we’re one goal short again."

"It’s tough. It’s a new experience for us here," said Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf. "We have to find a way to dig ourselves out of this thing."

"I thought we came out of the gates okay. We still dug a hole," Getzlaf said. "There is no doubt about that. The score doesn’t lie. At some point during the game, we let ourselves get down and get behind."

"I think things picked up when we started hitting them and playing physical," said Andrew Cogliano. "With a team like that, you have to take the body and stall them. That is how we got turnovers and started making more plays. Other than the first 20-30 minutes, we took the game to them."

"It’s not a matter of what I can say now," Getzlaf said. "We are in a situation where we have to play ourselves out of it and that includes me. I just have to keep playing and we have to lead by example. Our group here, who I have been with for a little while, we have a great core of leaders and we just have to keep pushing."

Game 20: Ducks @ Stars 11.16.10

OPINION:
Just like all good "undefeated in regulation" streaks, it had to come to an end sooner or later. Would have preferred "later" but oh well. Time to make a new streak. If the Ducks had buried their chances, the outcome would be different. I counted 4 solid opportunities in the 1st period alone (Selanne, Marchant (breakaway), Carter, and Bobby) all should have had a goal in the 1st. But should, woulda, coulda doesn't win games. Unfortunately.

And I'm not usually one to pick on the refs. It takes special games to get me fired up against the refs. One of those is tonight. I'm not going to go into too much of a rant about it, because we've all heard it before and I hate being the stereotypical Ducks fan whining about the ref, but damn! THREE times the Stars could have been called for too many men, alone. The missed tripping call at the end of the game could have helped too. They were really letting the Stars get away with bloody hell out there in terms of penalties.

On to the next one.

POST GAME QUOTES:
"We had our fair share of chances," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "It wasn't like we were devoid of chances, we came up empty. Even more-so, we had lots of good chances on our power play, too. ... We're just not really sharp offensively. We got to think 'shoot more,' be a little more selfish."

OVERTIME: 4 - 3





OPINION:
This was an important 2 points to grab up to begin the 7 game home-stand. That said, the game should have never gone to Overtime to begin with. The Ducks had a 3 goal lead in the 2nd period and watched it slip to a 1 goal lead in a matter of 18 seconds. Tampa managed to tie it up in the 3rd and then we found ourselves in OT. And Ducks fans know OT should be re-named into Scotty-Time. It's where Niedermayer really knows how to shine. You give him 4-on-4 hockey and he's great, you give him 4-on-3 hockey and he's even better, which is how it went down for this game. Ducks had a power play that gave them a 4-on-3 advantage and Scotty recieved a beautiful pass from Getzlaf to secure the 2nd point and send the Lightning packing. Ducks fans would like to hope that this could be the start to a winning streak that can go further than 2 games, but it wont be easy. They face the San Jose Sharks on Saturday, who are currently holding the #1 spot in the entire league. (But we saw how well that worked out for them last season ;-) )

POST GAME QUOTES:
“Unfortunately, we left them back in the game after a good start,” Niedermayer said immediately after the game, “but that’s the way it goes. Getz made a great play to bring the guy with him and it left me alone in the slot. Perrs made a great screen and I just had to get it where the goalie wasn't, and I was able to do it.”

"We weren’t feeling very proud after giving up a three-goal lead in our building, yet we found a way to get the last one to get the two points," said Ducks coach Randy Carlyle. "The positives were we had lots of energy at the beginning of the game. We skated and created a lot more in this game from the outset. That is the most encouraging sign and the building point that we want to take forward."

"We showed some resiliency," Ryan said. "In the past, we would have let those three goals really go to our heart and that would have been a time of self destruction for us. But as a group, we pulled tonight and grinded out the two points."

"We have a good homestand that we want to play well in," Niedermayer said. "We’re not really looking too far ahead. We’ll take each one as they come. It’s nice to get a win tonight."

GAME DAY QUOTES:
"I think the confidence that I took from Iowa coming up has really just translated.," Ryan Said. "Playing with [Ryan] Getzlaf and [Corey] Perry gives me a little more. I know I’m free to do a couple different things here and there and I’m not going to get punished every time I try something.Individually it’s nice to put up points and it’s nice to get your feet under you. All that doesn’t mean a whole lot when you’re losing a game you should have won."

"We have to be ready to play for the full 60 minutes," Corey Perry said. "Coming out and giving up three goals right away, it doesn’t help our cause. The rest of the game we have to battle back. It’s an uphill climb when you get down 3-0 in the first five minutes."

"They are a skilled team, but we knew that," said Perry. "We knew we couldn’t come in and take penalties. Their power play is too good. They shoot the puck and get to the net. If we play five-on-five, you never know what can happen."

Ducks coach Randy Carlyle voiced his frustration about the large amount of penalties, a problem for much of the season for Anaheim. "We’ve only talked about it about 250 million times," Carlyle said. "Obviously, it has to resort to some drastic measures. I think we’re in a situation where we’re going to continue to make changes and consider lineup changes if that is going to continue."
