Bobby Ryan Finishes 2nd in Calder Trophy Voting

Ducks winger Bobby Ryan finished second in the voting for the Calder Trophy, given to the NHL's top rookie. Columbus goalie Steve Mason won the award with 1,268 points, including 121 first-place votes. Ryan finished with 829 points, with nine first-place votes. Fellow finalist Kris Versteeg of the Chicago Blackhawks took third with 323 points (one first-place vote).

Ryan led all NHL rookies with 31 goals in only 64 games. He was Rookie of the Month for January when he scored 11 goals and had five asssits in 14 games. He had the first rookie hat trick in Ducks history when he scored three goals Jan. 8 at Los Angeles. The three goals were scored within 2:21, the third-fastest hat trick by a rookie in NHL history.

Mason deserved to win without question, but Bobby deserved it too. I think of it like a 1A and 1B situation. Ducks fans know that too well with the goalie scenario, and now I'm applying it with the Calder Trophy scenario. I think if Bobby had been up the whole season, it would have been his. Congratulations to Mason though, he did deserve it for leading and paving the way to Columbus' first appearance in the playoffs.
