Game 8: Ducks at Flyers 10.21.10

OPINION:
In a game where the Ducks were desperate to get their first win on the road, being 0-4-0 on the road thus far, they found a way to win. They did everything they could, and pulled it out and won the game. They started fast in the first period with a quick goal to start the game on the right foot ( as opposed to their usual left foot starts ). They left that period ahead by a goal at 2-1.

Their second period got a little slopping, and they lost themselves a bit, but not enough to leave the period only in a tie game at 2-2. They entered the 3rd knowing they needed to pull out all the stops to get that winning goal, before overtime was needed. And then it happened. In a quick play of crashing the net, Getzlaf managed to squeek the puck past the Philadelphia goal crease. It had to be reviewed but the review showed very clearly that the puck did cross the line completely and the Ducks were credited with the goal, which would be the game winning goal.

It wasn't easy, and I don't think anyone thought it would be, but they managed to hang in there and walk away with the victory. Their next stop on Saturday is at the same arena they started their season in. Eveyone say it with me-- the always unfriendly Joe Louis Arena. I really don't have high expectations on this one, just given their experiences in that building, but hey... if they want to prove my expectations could be higher, I welcome it.

POST GAME QUOTES:
"The initial shot, he stopped with his stick and I was able to get another swipe at it," Getzlaf said. "I saw it go in, and judging from my reaction, you could tell. It was one of those things where we caught a break at the end. It was a big relief for us. We've been working pretty hard and not necessarily getting the bounces, so this helps."

"It doesn't matter how it goes in," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said. "It went in. I don't care if it was an end-to-end rush, a fluke from center, whatever it is. We're desperate for wins. We found a way to get the job done."

"When he shot the puck I tried to stop it, but it slid right by me," said the 22-year-old rookie [McElhinney], who made his fourth start. "The team lost and I feel like it's my fault. I have to play better. We must win the game."

"It felt great," [McElhinney] said. "There were some nerves early on, and a couple of rebounds that got away from me. As the game went on, I felt more comfortable. Everybody collapsed well and did a tremendous job in front of me. It was an all-around great effort from everybody."

POST GAME QUOTES:
"Nobody wants to be in this situation where we’re not getting involved and not doing certain things," said Ducks center Ryan Getzlaf. "We didn’t start playing until the third period and that is not acceptable in this league. We’re not going to accept it as a group. We have to get ready to go ready to go tomorrow and get back on our horse."

"It was us executing at a higher level," Lupul said of the third period. "It’s up to everyone to take control of the puck, settle it down and give it to other people on the tape. In the third period, we started doing that. It seemed like everyone to make a difference, whereas the first two periods we were real tentative and our execution was very poor."

"It’s the mental part of the game that is tough," Getzlaf said. "You have 82 games and you have to learn to get up for all of them. It doesn’t have to be yelling at each other. Everybody gets ready in their own way, but either way, we have to be ready when that puck drops and we weren’t tonight."

"It starts right now, changing the focus to the next game and knowing that that first 20 minutes is going to be our focus and we’ll go from there," Lupul said. "We should all be ready off the start and that is what we’re looking for on Saturday."

Ducks Win 4-3!!!!

Period 1: 1 - 0
Period 2: 4 - 0
Period 3: 4 - 3

Dominated the first 2 periods then penalties took hold and barely squeaked by in the 3rd. This is why they need to play a FULL 60 minutes! Sutherby, Marchant, Sammy, and Getzy got the 4 goals which proved to be just enough to get the 2 points they desperately need.

GAME DAY QUOTES:
DUCKS:
"I think we feel good in the sense that we won," Ducks center Todd Marchant said. "We've won two in a row. That's a start, right?"

[on his goal] "I watched the replay after the game, and I'm actually looking the other way when it goes in the net," Marchant said. "I had no idea. It's just a fluke break - whatever it is. Those are things you need to get out of your funk, your team's bad spells."

"You knew they were going to come with some form of a charge," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "That's what good teams do. You expect, sitting on 4-0, that one power play or one penalty can turn the momentum. That's what it did."

"We played pretty good the first two periods," Hiller said. "We got a little lucky on a couple of goals, and then kind of lost our game in the third. I'm sure we're happy about the win, but we have to talk about it. "I felt pretty good the first two periods, but I was kind of late on all three goals, so I couldn't be all happy about that. I'm not all happy, but I'm on the right track."

"We played better than we played in Toronto," Carlyle said. "That's been our goal - get better every game. "We'll take it, even though we made it tight."
